Night Watch Fleet |
A major focus of the fleet has been education in matters related to boating with the ultimate goal of increasing the level of comfort, confidence and competence in its members while out on the water in any type of vessel, sail or power or paddled. We have had charting & navigation classes, man overboard drills, anchoring practice and knot-tying seminars. There are usually two “sunset cruises” every year and a Women’s Sabot Regatta every fall. Some of our members have their own Sabots and hold impromptu practice sessions on the weekends in the summer, often followed by an informal barbecue at the Club. Additionally, a number of the NWF members are active in KHYC Race Committee duties for many of the regattas sponsored by the Club. We have also organized non-nautical activities such as spending a weekend in the mountains, visiting the Comedy & Magic Club, and going to the Hollywood Bowl. We enjoy fun and friendship with each other in these types of trips. NWF initiated a “Woman Of The Year” trophy in 1996 as a way of honoring the women of the Club who have contributed greatly to its ongoing success. It is awarded annually every November to a deserving female club member. Our meetings are held the first Tuesday of each month. We start with a potluck dinner at 7:00 p.m. in conjunction with the Cal 20 Fleet, followed by our meeting at around 7:30. The two fleets sometimes meet together if we have an interesting speaker on the agenda. We have had talks from the Marine Mammal Care Center, Heal the Bay, the Topsail program in San Pedro, and even a paddle-boarding judge. We have heard from all types of racers and cruisers. We have also had non-nautical speakers addressing subjects like financial planning, self-defense techniques and women’s health care issues. And we have many meetings where we just sit around and chat. |
